Third solo album by Lucio Balduini, the successor of Viento divino is an inspired journey with subtle and luminous companions at the same time. It is an honor to present this work by one of the musicians most admired by his colleagues.
Lucio Balduini’s third album is bright despite the chiaroscuro. Or, rather, it has flashes, like a forest with bright spots at night. It is the natural continuation of his previous work, Viento divino (2012). The only change in the lineup is Esteban Sehinkman’s entry on keyboards instead of Jesús Fernández. The rest of the quartet remains the same, with Mariano Sivori on bass and Pipi Piazzolla on drums.
If in his previous work Lucio seemed to look back, approaching slightly to the sound of groups end of the ’70, in this case seems to project forward. Sehinkman synthesizers bring a lot of that futuristic touch. Balduini’s harmonic and melodic imagination is galactic: he flies free on the bases he designed himself and the chords increased or low in the seventh or ninth are his signature.
Something that many musicians admire of this guitarist is his sound, and part of that charm (of course, besides his hands) is in the virtuoso handling of the effects pedals that he uses. The recurrence of bars of irregular metrics also allows the showing of Pipi Piazzolla, although there are many beautiful moments of 4/4.
There are a couple of songs that were already, in completely different version in Transmutacion, the CD of Pipi Piazzolla Trio. It is Cascada milagrosa (track 7) and Piedra lunar (10). And there are two gems, brought to the instrumental, by Luis Alberto Spinetta: The La rifa del viento (2), little versioned song by Mondo di cromo (1983), and the close, intimate, Para ir (from the album Almendra 2, de 1970). Familiarity with Spinetta’s work was in the air, but now Lucio takes care of that stylistic closeness, which has a spiritual side: there is in both a clear search for transcendence through music, which goes far beyond The technique or the enjoyment. Music as a mission in the pursuit of the heavenly.
Of the new material it must be said that the beginning, with En busca de la tierra sin mal, and its ostinato is very powerful. Superestrella is a rock song without lyrics in which simplicity and beauty go hand in hand. It is a complete listening CD over and over again, with luxurious audio. The audition of this album guarantees happiness.
